Throughout my experience, I gained a cultural insight that broadened my understanding of the global market.

Leadership

GLOBAL LEARNING MEDALLION
The Global Learning Medallion is an interactive, participatory program consisting of an extensive series of courses and activities that were designed to enhance my global awareness, global perspective, and attitude of global engagement. My participation in the Medallion program has allowed me to connect to invaluable, high impact opportunities such as global learning courses at FIU helping me expand my global knowledge, participating in global co-curricular activities, and creating a capstone at the end of my program to showcase all my accomplishments and global experiences.

PEACE CORPS PREP
Peace Corps Prep at Florida International University is a program managed by FIU’s Office of Global Learning Initiatives, through a formal partnership with the Peace Corps national office. Throughout my time in the program, I had the opportunity to volunteer to help children within at-risk communities, increased my knowledge in the Spanish language, partake in global learning courses at FIU, and enhance my informational, networking, and mentorship opportunities making me a competitive applicant for the Peace Corps and other international development positions.

ACADEMY OF LEADERS
The Academy of Leaders (AOL) is a premier structured leadership development program for FIU students. AOL helped me develop leadership through educational seminars, experiential exercises, and practical application. I was able to participate in intensive training sessions that focused on building awareness of personality type and leadership style, group development, conflict resolution, and facilitating an effective meeting.

Excellence in Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction
The Excellence in Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction is a type of recognition that FIU awards to its current students that serve their communities in all sorts of different ways. By being a part of the Peace Corps Prep, I was able to satisfy this medallion program with the completion of my Global Engagement Project by volunteering 100+ hours of my time to my community.

Certified Student Leader Program
The Certified Student Leader Program is a collaboration within the Division of Student Affairs at FIU that provides an opportunity for students to articulate how the involvements they are doing outside of the classroom help better prepare them for the workforce to employers. CSLP has helped me articulate skills that I would have not learned by just sitting in a classroom reading out of a textbook. CSLP has made me a more involved and active student both on and off campus.

CAMP FIESTA
Created in 1985 as the official pediatric oncology camp for the patients of the Children’s Cancer Caring Center, Inc. Camp Fiesta is a non-profit camp for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Each summer, fifty children between the ages of 7-17 become stronger physically, as well as emotionally. In October of 2008, I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and I got to experience the amazing effects that Camp Fiesta brings to everyone; making me a stronger and happier person throughout my chemotherapy treatments. As time went on and I got older, I got the wonderful opportunity to become a camp counselor and I have been one every summer since 2011.

DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY
In March of 2014, Steve Harvey, along with ESSENCE Magazine, hosted their annual Disney Dreamers Academy in Orlando, FL. Disney Dreamers Academy is a power-packed, 4-day event held annually at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL, in which 100 select high school students are inspired to dream big and get a jump-start on making those dreams come true. I was very fortunate to partake in this program along with 99 other young adults from all over the country. The fact that I was able to get in front of celebrities, famous chefs, doctors, journalists, etc. and talk about my goals and dreams of why I want to give back to my community and start a nonprofit in my area meant so much to me, and the support I have gotten since then has been incredible.

CUSTOM INK (formally known as Booster)
A dear friend of mine passed away in February of 2015 due to cancer, and I have done two fundraisers in her honor. With the help of Custom Ink, I created a t-shirt that helped spread the awareness of children’s cancer and all funds raised went to families at either Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (formally Miami Children’s Hospital) or Baptist Hospital to help with medical expenses. I was once a cancer patient as a child, so I understand the hardships medical expenses can add for families dealing with a child who has cancer. All I wanted to do was give back and help families in need.
